What is a DeFi hack?
A DeFi hack (or exploit) is when an attacker finds and abuses a vulnerability in a smart contract or protocol to drain funds — often millions of dollars — in a matter of seconds. Common attack vectors include flash loan attacks, oracle price manipulation, leaked private keys, and reentrancy bugs. Because everything runs on a public blockchain, funds move fast and are rarely recovered.
The damage is not confined to the contract that was exploited. A drained protocol's holdings are gone, and whatever depends on it carries that loss directly: pools that routed liquidity through it, protocols holding its token as collateral, wrapped assets it backed. That exposure is structural — you can trace it from the contract, without predicting anything. The window to exit is small.
