Exchange halt alerts: know the instant trading stops or resumes

What is a trading halt?

A trading halt is the moment an exchange stops matching orders for an instrument. On Bybit, every perpetual carries a trading status. When that status leaves "Trading", the book freezes: new orders can't fill, and anyone holding a position is locked out until matching restarts.

Halts don't happen at calm moments. They cluster around extreme volatility, liquidation cascades, and technical incidents — exactly when you most need to act. And when the instrument flips back to "Trading", the book can reopen at a sharply different price.

Knowing the instant trading stops or restarts turns a frozen, blind window into something you can plan around.

What Darkmen tracks

The CEX Halt / Resume module watches the trading status of Bybit perpetual instruments — BTC, ETH, and SOL. It fires the moment an instrument's status flips:

  • A trading halt — the status leaves "Trading" and the book freezes
  • A resume — the status returns to "Trading" and matching restarts

Each alert tells you the symbol and whether it halted or resumed, so there's no ambiguity about which market just changed state and in which direction.

How the alert works

The instant the status flips, Darkmen pushes an alert to your connected channels. No watching the exchange status page, no refreshing an order book that may already be frozen.

How to use it:

  • Holding a Bybit position on BTC, ETH, or SOL? A halt alert tells you the book is frozen — manage risk on correlated venues instead of waiting blind.
  • Got a resume alert? Trading is matching again, often after a sharp move. Check your open orders before the reopened book runs against them.
  • Halts and resumes can precede sharp price moves. Treat the flip as a signal that this market just entered an unstable window.

FAQ

What is a trading halt on a crypto exchange?

A trading halt is when an exchange suspends order matching for an instrument. On Bybit, the perpetual's status leaves 'Trading', so new orders can't fill and open positions are frozen until trading resumes. Halts often come during extreme volatility or technical issues.

Why do exchanges halt and resume trading?

Exchanges pause trading to protect the order book during sharp moves, settle technical problems, or manage risk events. When conditions normalize, the instrument's status returns to 'Trading' and matching restarts — sometimes at a very different price.

Why does a halt or resume matter for my positions?

A halt freezes your ability to add, cut, or exit a position while the market keeps repricing elsewhere. A resume can reopen the book with a price gap. Both moments leave open orders exposed, so knowing the instant the status flips lets you react instead of discovering it after the fact.

Which instruments does Darkmen watch for halts?

Darkmen tracks the trading status of Bybit perpetual instruments for BTC, ETH, and SOL. When an instrument flips into a halt or back to trading, the alert fires immediately to your connected channels.
